[kat.6.1] Culture Fusion I

Artists statement (in english)

The need for expressing himself through sounds has over the years increased compared with the other media in 2 D and 3 D whether it is painting or sculpture. MJ performs sometimes solo, and have over the years with different groups performed with music at music festivals in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Belgium and Denmark. The musical experiences MJ has made are including guitar, vocal, drums and sound editing.

"Like my bronze and stone masks series I produced in Canada, I talk about cultural identity. Through my mixed blood and history I have become what I am, myself, and I have a strong need to share my world with deep roots in Greenland and which of course through colonial history is a mix of more cultures like most of the world citizens have today some way or another, that is mixed cultures which have become new cultures. "

"In my history it is just based on a group of arctic peoples "Inuit" (kalaallit)in Greenland (my mother'owns and my birth place, and through my Nordic relations in Denmark through my father's family. The masks I have made are a comment to the masks which was destroyed after Greenland was colonized in 1721. Making the new masks in stone and particularly in bronze I try to hold on to thought of the lost masks, well knowing my masks will be disintegrated with time.
